a mish-mash

DSC_9896

I`ve been so hit-and-miss with posting on the blog lately.  I probably have a dozen half finished posts sitting my draft folder.  When I say half finished, I mean I have compiled the photos, but there are no words to go along with them!

Let’s fix that, shall we?

I`ve been keeping very busy lately, and generally enjoying the beautiful spring weather (knock on wood!!).   Some of the funnest things I`ve done lately have been:

+ visiting the tulip festival (& photographing ton & tons & tons of tulips, duh)

+ hosting two of my girlfriends for my first ever girls-only cottage weekend last.  Each other them cooked one meal, and holy wow, they were fantastic.  The first day, we had omelettes with pancetta, diced tomato, parsley & goats cheese (seriously, they were insane) and the next day we had fluffy french toast with berry sauce and powdered sugar.  Pictures coming soon!!!

+ Trying new restaurants around town.  Tonight I had gourmet donuts… Think maple bacon, banana foster, and lemon thyme.  Lemon thyme sounded so unappealing, but it ranked in my top three. Out of six.  We tried six donuts. Please don`t judge me…

What else, what else…

After a few months of unemployment, I finally found a job about a month ago.   It’s a temporary position, but it came at the perfect time, and I couldn`t be happier to have found that position!   It’s keeping me really busy, and that combined with putting extra effort into meeting up with friends, and spending tons of time outside to enjoy the nice whether has had me somewhat distracted from the blog.  I fully intend to change that, though!  I miss it here.

I started running this Spring, and I was in the habit of going three times a week with my girlfriends.  We`ve fallen off the wagon a bit lately, but this is my commitment to myself to get right back ON that wagon!  I am cutting myself a little slack this week because I am running a 10K race this weekend.  It will be the furthest I have run in about 9 years, and I may have to walk some (most) of it, but I figured completing a 10K is pretty good exercise whether I walk it or run it.  Either way, I am outside being active!  If I somehow magically run the entire thing, I may just have to throw myself a party ;)

My birthday was last week, and I was lucky to be gifted a new lens for my camera, hence the random pictures of lilacs interspersed throughout this post!  I loooove taking up close photos of plants, flowers, animals, bugs… But I was nice enough to leave out the picture I took from about an inch away from a creepy black spider.  You`re welcome ;)

the tulip festival

Every year, my hometown Ottawa hosts “The Canadian Tulip Festival.”  All through downtown and along our lakes and rivers, you`ll find thousands & thousands of blossoming tulips in various colors.  It’s beautiful, and it’s the perfect way to usher in Spring every year.  Even cooler than the festival itself is the history behind it…

During the second world war, Canada provided a safe refuge for the Dutch Princess Juliana & her daughters, an escape from the Nazi invasion, and each year since 1945, the Netherlands has sent thousands of tulip bulbs as a gesture of gratitude towards Canada!

I rushed down there one (somewhat cloudy) day after work, to snap some colorful shots.  I don`t have much to say to go along with the photos, but I hope they captured the beauty of spring here, and that they add a little color to your day!!!

a day to celebrate our moms

Looking over my pictures from Sunday, I couldn`t be happier that Mother’s Day occurs smack dab in the middle of Spring, the season of rebirth, and sunny skies, and colorful flowers!

After a day of rain, the sky was blue, the trees were green, the sun was out, and the flowers were open.  In other words, I was in picture-snapping heaven!

My family had a lovely brunch, complete with the above fruit smoothies, and the below iced tea bar!

Just looking at the photos of the tulips and the pink flowers makes my heart happy!  Spring is the greatest.  Fitting, because so is my Mom!  I hope you all had a lovely weekend, some time (or a long conversation) with your mom, and hopefully some nice weather to go along with it all!
